(L to R) Dona Ainsley, Jeff, John and Ainsley McCullers

Another high-profile ally has lined up to support beloved former high school teacher, John F. “Jeff” McCullers for Lee County School Board, District 2.

Women’s March Fort Myers, which leads the women-led march for human rights, became the latest local group to join an army of former superintendents, school principals, labor unions, business leaders, and community organizations to endorse McCullers.

Already endorsing McCullers are the Teachers Association of Lee County, the Support Personnel Association of Lee County, the Island Coast Florida Education Association Retired, the Lee County Young Democrats, the Hispanic Vote Southwest Florida, Teachers for Public School Excellence, and the Lee County LGTBQA Democratic Caucus. They have embraced McCullers’ plan to repair deep fissures in the Lee County School Board’s leadership and bridge the divide among members.

McCullers is challenging beleaguered incumbent Melisa Giovanelli, whose reelection efforts are mired in scandal as the Florida Commission on Ethics’ investigation into her possible misconduct on the School Board drags on. Giovanelli faces new allegations she has been ineffective in her office, unresponsive to parents and teachers in her district, and frequently has been a no-show for important member votes. Giovanelli has ignored calls for her resignation in light of the ethics probe into her alleged violations.

Women’s March Fort Myers includes people from all political parties, racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and gender and sexual identities, supporting social change and promoting equality. The organization cited McCullers’ inclusive message of unity over division and his pragmatic yet compassionate platform which promotes self-determined equity for women, including pay equality, a living wage, early childhood education, healthcare access for children and families, social and racial justice, and a healthy, sustainable environment.
