The Inauguration Committee for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is hosting a National Day of Service on Mon., Jan. 18, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We urge Democrats to participate in service events involving COVID-19 relief and related challenges such as poverty, hunger, racial injustice, homelessness, mental health and educational disparities.
Here in Florida, one in eight people, an estimated 2,768,480 Floridians, are struggling with hunger and one in five children are hungry, according to Feeding America. Ron DeSantis and the GOP-led legislature continue to fail us.
The Florida Democratic Party and The Lee County Democratic Party call on Democrats to support the National Day of Service by aiding food banks:
— Gladiolus Pantry, 10511 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33908, 239-437-8122 — open on Wednesdays 11:30 AM-1:30 PM and 5 PM-7 PM. Please donate there on Wednesday instead of Monday.
— House of God Pantry, 201 Cuba Street, Fort Myers, FL 33916. It is open 24 hours, though hours may vary on MLK Day, Jan. 18.
— In addition, about 30 food pantries are listed at www.foodpantries.org, probably including some closer to your home or affiliated with a house of worship or organization you support.
Due to the pandemic the Lee County Democratic Party is celebrating the Biden-Harris inauguration by supporting these food banks instead of sponsoring in-person gatherings.
