Citizenship Classes for Tutors and Students

Why Citizenship Classes Matter Now

Becoming a U.S. citizen is more than passing a test—it’s a powerful step toward security, opportunity, and having a voice in shaping the future. Citizenship classes help immigrants build confidence in English, understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and prepare for the naturalization interview.

In today’s uncertain political climate, these classes are more important than ever. They offer the tools and knowledge to fully participate in American democracy, most importantly, the right to vote. Classes also create community, connecting students from diverse backgrounds who support and inspire each other.

Whether for peace of mind, protection, or a brighter future, there’s never been a better time to take the next step. If you or someone you know is ready to get started, REGISTER for class by contacting Keith Edison at keithfedison@yahoo.com or by text at 508-662-2121. Empower New Americans—Join Our Team of Citizenship Tutors

Tutoring citizenship classes is a deeply inspiring experience. You’ll receive training from experienced volunteers and help students build the English and civics skills needed for their citizenship interview, including lessons about voting and civic engagement. These classes create a strong sense of community, bridging cultures and forming lasting friendships. Tutors cheer on their students through every step, celebrating their successes and encouraging them through setbacks. It’s a powerful, rewarding way to support the American dream, and it’s one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen our country, one new citizen at a time.

Five Easy Steps for Prospective Teachers:

  1. Pick up the teacher packet from Keith Edison, the Citizenship Class Coordinator
  2. Take virtual or in-person classes with him.
  3. Observe a current class in person, then review the process afterward with the teacher.
  4. Assist a current class until you feel ready to take on your own class
  5. Start your class with help from a current teacher and materials provided by the Democratic Party of Lee County.

“Tutors often find themselves nervous when their students navigate the interview process, rooting for their success with all their hearts. As instructor Keith Edison says, “ Seeing their joy when they pass and take the oath of citizenship is simply unmatched. It’s a powerful, rewarding way to support the American dream, and it’s one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen our country, one new citizen at a time.”
