Citizenship Teacher Training

Tutoring is so rewarding.  If you’re interested in doing this, our tutors are trained by current tutors so they know and understand the process, get some tips for teaching, and then are situated in a class near where they live.

Step 1 – Pick up the teacher packet from Keith Edison, the Citizenship class Coordinator.
Step 2 – Take a virtual class with Linda Mooney
Step 3 – Observe a current class in person, then review the process afterward with the teacher.
Step 4 – Assist a current class until you feel ready to take on your own class
Step 5 – Start your class with assistance from a current teacher and materials provided by the Democratic Party of Lee County.
In class, we practice the four aspects of the interview/test for citizenship (speaking, reading, writing English, and a civics test). We also cover the voting and elections process since they are given the opportunity to register to vote when they are sworn in as a citizen.  Classes are fun as well as instructional and, although the students are all from different countries, they form friendships and help each other.  And, then they take the interview/test.  I find myself being almost as nervous as them, wanting so badly for them to pass. When they do and take the oath of citizenship, their joy is unmatched.  And, if they don’t (which is rare but usually due to not understanding/speaking English well enough), they square their shoulders and come back to class to prepare for taking it again.

Isn’t being involved in this process about as American as we can all be? If you’re interested in taking the class or becoming a tutor, contact Keith Edison at KeithFEdison@yahoo.com or Linda Mooney at lindamooney14@gmail.com .  Do it for them, do it for your relatives, do it for you.
